In Aja and Shilow’s first music video, “Jekyll & Hyde“ (the lead single from Aja’s debut album, Box Office in Feb. 2019), Shilow was being taken away by two psychiatric nurses upon the instruction of Aja. In the video for “The Purge”, released today, the duo has managed to escape from the dystopian facility, and take it to the streets just like the horror movie of the same name.
“The Purge”is the second single and opening trackfromNail in the Coffin (out Friday, 9/27), Aja & Shilow’s joint Halloween EP project blending emo punk, trap, country and EDM, paying homage to classic and modern horror films. Each song puts to rest the Aja and Shilow’s old selves along with their negative emotions, and the negative judgments and unnecessary criticisms from others that come with an artistic career. The EP’s Santeria-inspired lead single “Mama Chola,” was released on August 30th, accompanied by a music video shot in Kansas City.
Nail in the Coffin follows the release of Aja’s collaborations withRico Nasty and CupcakKe on her their debut album, Box Office (Feb. 2019), and summer EP, ALL CAPS featuring lead single, “COMMERCIAL” which was hailed by Billboard for having “tighter production value, and lyrics more forceful and thoughtful than we’ve yet seen from the multitalented artist.”
“‘The Purge’ is all about freedom of self expression and speaking your mind, mixing heavy themes with EDM and trap vibes. The release of pure emotion combined with the heavy feel of the beat was intentional to make the song cathartic for the listener. Aja says, “This track is the introduction to the project, and sets the tone for the whole EP. We are using the analogy of the Purge to truly say whatever we want.”
“The Purge” is the sequel to Aja and Shilow‘s “Jekyll & Hyde” which was praised by Billboard as “Some of their slickest and fastest rhymes” and said by Paper to be “a litany of audacious flexes, punching wordplay, and incisive introspection, all delivered in Aja’s vicious flow.”
