Canadian Pop artist Niki Kennedy is an indie chart topping, internationally recognized vocalist and powerful lyricist who leaves listeners with the incredible feeling that each song of hers was written directly for them. Since moving to Canada at the young age of 16 to attend Toronto’s exclusive Randolph College for Performing Arts, Niki’s unmistakeable talent has landed her appearances on CTV Morning and across Canadian radio.
As a natural performer, Niki has hosted over 400 shows online in recent months, and her musical releases have garnered over 350,000 combined streams on Spotify alone. Her single, “The Last Night (Dancing With You)” spent 6 weeks in the #1 spot on the Heart of Indie Radio Chart and the talented artist recently participated in the SOCAN Foundation’s TD Incubator for Creative Entrepreneurship Program.
Born from a month-long music production class taught by Grammy Award-winning artist and producer Ryan Tedder (One Republic) and later produced by Shane Stephenson, Niki’s first single of 2022 “Get Back In The Groove” is an upbeat, energizing musical representation of Niki’s ongoing journey of bursting out of the box that she once put herself in. The captivating, 80’s inspired pop song pulls in some of Niki’s vast musical influences, with elements of Whitney Houston, Janet Jackson, and classic 80’s elements blended throughout the song.
This week Niki released a brand new visualizer for the song – a colourful and upbeat representation of the music – disco-ball included!
As a self-proclaimed “sucker for the sad”, Niki’s “Get Back In The Groove” marks a new era in her music – one that still allows for the expression of her emotions, but through an upbeat, dance-infused sound – something that Niki previously convinced herself she wasn’t capable of. Infused with multiple vocal layers, synths, and beats reminiscent of 80’s disco-pop, the track features an energetic, rhythmic bassline woven throughout the entire song.
Often used in Hip-Hop and music from the 80’s and 90’s “Get Back In The Groove’s” musical architecture showcases Niki’s ability to take risks and experiment – with the aim of creating music that communicates her message in an accessible way for all listeners.
A song about getting back up after falling down and reminding each listener that they can achieve anything, Niki’s carefully crafted yet ambiguous lyrics create an intentional space for listeners to take what they need from the song while serving as a reminder that we should be gentle and patient with ourselves as we navigate through any and all of life’s toughest moments.
With the melody and tempo of the song inspired by Niki’s musical idols Whitney Houston and Janet Jackson, Niki’s latest song is a fun, upbeat, track with an empathetic message that will make any listener want to get up and dance like nobody’s watching.
Through “Get Back In The Groove,” Niki reminds listeners that there is ‘no magic reset button’ in life and to allow ourselves time to heal and move on from dark times. Niki’s powerful, relatable lyrics and musicality have set her apart, and her new single, “Get Back In The Groove” will be sure to delight her current and soon-to-be fans, alike.
“Get Back in the Groove is about getting out of a funk and empowering ourselves to keep pushing through. With a gentle lyrical reminder to give ourselves a little grace, the song hopes to make those in need of a little boost or pick-me-up, feel good.” – Niki Kennedy
