Singer/songwriter/activist Jennifer Harper was destined for music. Raised in Washington, D.C., in a musical family, piano enchanted the artist starting at a young age. Eventually, She went on to study classical piano and later taught herself to play songs she heard on Simon & Garfunkel, CSNY, and Joni Mitchell records that her older sisters owned.
But as a teen, she was drawn into alternative-music venues and reggae clubs. Hearing music at political rallies made the deepest impression on the artist. “I saw how music was motivating change,” she says. And she wanted in.
Strong female voices of the ’80s, like Annie Lennox and Chrissie Hynde, inspired Harper. The raw intimacy of Tracy Chapman’s voice and lyrics gave her the strength to be an artist true to her own experiences.
Her newest single, “Change is Coming,” is an anthem for womanhood, sisterhood, and motherhood; about the divine feminine rising. Women coming together to heal – releasing sisterhood wounds and embracing the new paradigm. The drums beat to a marching rhythm and the lyrics are almost a chant. As the song progresses you can feel the power rising in her voice and her message.
Jennifer wrote the song during the pandemic when she was part of two women’s circles: one a songwriting circle and the other a mastermind for personal growth, sisterhood, and expansion.
“Prior to the mastermind, I had never heard of the terms ‘sisterhood and motherhood wounds,’ shares Jennifer. “Sharing deeply in intimate circles with successful, spiritual, women around the world throughout the pandemic – I noticed that feelings of being too much, fear of our personal power and comparison were recurring themes. I could easily see how these wounds had played out in my life, but I began to contemplate how they are affecting us on a collective level. The transformation I experienced in sisterhood with these women changed my life in profound ways. I wish that for all women. ”
