On November 1st, Crywolf returns with “your joy is your sorrow unmasked,” his first original single since his early 2019 album, widow [OBLIVION pt. 1]. Crywolf constantly challenges the expectation that an artist must fit into a singular genre. Diverging from his known electronic-tinged landscapes, he boldly steps into new territory on his new single, employing an acoustic-approach that drips with emotional resonance.
“your joy is your sorrow unmasked” rises from the ashes of heartbreak, intertwining lilting vocals and melancholy instrumentation in order to create a delicate yet powerful listen. “I wrote this song the first time I tried to imagine her and couldn’t quite picture her face,” Crywolf writes of his past lover who inspired the track. “It felt like a sort of second of death for the relationship; a sign that I had truly grown into a completely different form, one that had never touched her skin. She had become a stranger to me.”
Crywolf is the project of producer, vocalist, and multi-instrumentalist Justin Taylor Phillips. He released his 16-track album widow [OBLIVIØN Pt. I] earlier this year, which he followed with a US tour and remix album. Currently residing in Bali, Crywolf is creating [OBLIVIØN Pt. 2], set for release in 2020. In keeping with the stripped-back nature of the new single, Crywolf has also announced Crywolf Unplugged, an intimate night of acoustic music at Los Angeles’ Moroccan Lounge on January 16th. Tickets are available here.
