(Austin, TX) January 21, 2022 – Multi-instrumentalist and cinematic pop singer/songwriter Ferera Swan has just released her newest single, “To Say Goodbye,” an homage to adult children of closed adoptions. As an adopted child herself, Ferera uses music to navigate her feelings associated with being adopted, like grief, pain, and shame.
“To Say Goodbye” is like that of Sara McLaughlin, Kelly Clarkson, and Skylar Gray with some cinematic musical influences as well. She uses the music in such a way, that it feels like you’re separated. The ethereal nature of the music itself and the meaning of the lyrics create a song that feels distant, but welcoming at the same time.
“Adoptee grief is largely misunderstood by those outside of this life experience. We grieve our mothers, families, our roots. I believe it’s in allowing ourselves to hold grief and gratitude simultaneously—the integration of both—where we can truly discover healing,” shares Ferera.
“The lyrics in the chorus of ‘To Say Goodbye’ is intended to be more of a rhetorical question, but more of an invitation to explore this kind of ambiguous loss. After struggling for most of my life asking myself, how do I let go of my mother? I’ve realized: I don’t. With certain kinds of loss, perhaps it’s not about letting go, but about looking in, finding the courage to sit with our pain, being changed by what it tells us, and experiencing the healing that will come as a result of that act of self-love and bravery.”
