Scottish singer-songwriter Lewis Capaldi debuts the “Someone You Loved (Official Video)” today on Vevo. Shot outside London, the video was directed by Ozzie Pullin. Watch it HERE.
“I wanted to show another side to the song,” says Capaldi. “For me the video is about the people we surround ourselves with that have the strength when we don’t and help us continue to make the right decisions in moments of fear or hardship. In the moment we often choose to ignore friends and family, thinking our judgement is better, but of course in hindsight when you’re in that headspace it’s almost impossible to make the right decisions.”
The official video heightens awareness of the need for organ donors and stars Capaldi’s distant cousin, Peter Capaldi who portrayed the Twelfth Doctor in the iconic British television show “Dr. Who.”
The RIAA has certified Capaldi’s breakout single, “Someone You Loved,” as Platinum, recognizing one million equivalent song units earned in the U.S. The song shattered records throughout Europe and is now certified Platinum or greater in a total of 14 countries. “Someone You Loved” spent a nearly unprecedented seven weeks at No. 1 on the U.K. Official Singles chart and continues to climb on the Billboard Hot 100, now entering the Top 15. Capaldi also held the #1 position on Spotify’s Today’s Top Hits, hit Top 20 on the Spotify U.S. chart, topped the Pandora chart and reached #2 on the global Shazam chart.
Says Capaldi, “When I found out about this, I thought it was a joke. I still think it must be some kind of elaborate joke I’m not in on! Thank you to everyone who bought it, streamed it or shouted it at a stranger in a park, I’m thinking my record label surely can’t drop me in the next 6 months after this. That is the real achievement here, the dream of a slightly chubby boy from Scotland singing sad songs lives on. X”
“Someone You Loved” is from Capaldi’s debut album, Divinely Uninspired To A Hellish Extent, which is the fastest selling UK debut of 2019 with 90,000 albums sold in the first week. Robert Christgau, reviewing for Noisey, awarded the album an A- and hailed it as “a feat of uncommon emotional intelligence.” Stereogum declares, “Capaldi is establishing himself as a stateside force,” and TIME says, “Lewis Capaldi has the kind of deep, textured voice that you could listen to for hours.”
The 22-year-old artist made his U.S. late night television debut on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” in June. The following week, he performed “Someone You Loved” on “The Late Late Show with James Corden” and, in a first for the show, Corden invited Capaldi back to perform for a second night in a row. Capaldi’s North American fall tour is nearly sold out. Full itinerary can be found here.
His March 2020 tour of the UK and Ireland sold out in mere seconds, making him the first artist in history to sell out arenas prior to the release of a debut album.
Capaldi was hailed as a 2018 Vevo DSCVR Artist To Watch and a 2019 Vevo LIFT Artist, longlisted for the BBC Sound Of 2018 Poll, and won Breakthrough Artist of the Year honors at the Scottish Music Awards. He was nominated for the BRIT Awards Critics’ Choice award and named an MTV UK PUSH Ones To Watch artist. Capaldi has toured with Ed Sheeran, The Killers, Bastille, Rag’n’Bone Man, Niall Horan, and Sam Smith, and performed at such festivals as Lollapalooza, Bonnaroo, Firefly, Mountain Jam, Splendour in the Grass, Fuji, and Osheaga.
